Has America Done Enough?

Today Bush encouraged Congress to commit to a 30 billion dollar plan to provide treatment for for more than 2 million people infected with HIV/Aids across the globe.  This amount would span a period of 5 years, a dollar amount that has doubled since first approved by Bush in 2003.

I’m sure this stipulation will help.  But I can’t help but wonder that this pledge has come at an opportune time when the genocide in Darfur has been escalated and the Bush Administration would like to be seen doing something positive for Africa’s unfortunate.

It is estimated by the United Nations that over 40 million people are infected with Aids or HIV.  It is thought that of the 40 million infected, 25 million live in Sub-Saharan Africa – more than any other continent.  80% of those 25 million don’t even know they have the dreaded disease or virus.

So, I ask, will throwing money at the problem be all that the United States does?  Maybe education on how to prevent the spread of this virus should also be a focal point.

There are people out there helping, countries helping and I will do my best to bring those people to light in hopes that we may learn from what they are doing and follow suit.  I would like very much to help those in need but feel that since I have no personal resources to do any good.

Let me know what your ideas are so we can get them out there.
